What is Fluoride Varnish?

    • Fluoride varnish is a protective resin coating of sodium fluoride used to help prevent teeth against tooth decay.

How is Fluoride Varnish applied?

    • Fluoride Varnish is painted on the tooth enamel. Application is quick, easy, and painless.

How does Fluoride Varnish help my child's teeth?

    • 1 application cuts tooth decay risk in half, but works best when Fluoride Varnish is applied at least 4 times. Fluoride helps to protect and prevent tooth decay.

How many times can my child receive Fluoride Varnish per year?

    • Fluoride Varnish can be applied up to 5 times a year:
      • 3 times in the medical office
      • 2 times in the dental office

At what age can my child start receiving Fluoride Varnish?

    • Fluoride Varnish can be applied as soon as the first tooth comes in.

How often should my child receive Fluoride Varnish?

    • After the first Fluoride Varnish application, subsequent applications can be done every 3-4 months.
    • For children receiving CHDP exams, Fluoride Varnish can be scheduled during their CHDP well child exams, follow-up visits, sick visits, or standalone appointments.

Who can apply Fluoride Varnish?

    • Clinic staff members who have completed required training are able to apply to children under a physician's order.

My child uses fluoridated toothpaste, does he still need Fluoride Varnish?

    • Fluoride Varnish helps even if using fluoride drops, tablets, rinses, toothpaste, or drinking fluoridated water.

What do I need to know after my child receives Fluoride Varnish?

    • The teeth may be slightly discolored (yellow/brown) from the varnish, but brushing the next morning will return the teeth to their normal color.
    • Don't brush or floss child's teeth for the rest of the day, resume brushing and flossing the next morning.
    • Avoid giving foods that are hard, crunchy, or chewy the rest of the day.
    • Do not give food or beverages for an hour after application.  Water is OK to drink.
    • If the child is taking fluoride supplements, do not take supplements until 3 days after Fluoride Varnish application.
